Community involvement

Community and stakeholder involvement objectives

The objectives of the community involvement program for this study are to:

  • Inform the community about the route selection process and opportunities for involvement.
  • Involve the community in detailed planning, environmental and engineering studies that will form parts of the route selection process and establish a mutually beneficial two-way flow of information.
  • Identify and understand community issues, values and concerns and ensure that all issues raised by the community are considered and addressed during the development of the project.
  • Respond to community requests for information in a timely manner.
  • Facilitate an open and fair process where mutual trust can be developed.
  • Assist stakeholders and the community to understand the process of route selection and the next steps.

Community and stakeholder involvement activities

Community activities are outlined below.

A freecall information line has been established (1800 800 612) where the community can speak to the study team during business hours to discuss issues of concern, request information or register a comment. If the phone is unattended, an answering machine will be activated. Please leave a message and the project team will call you back as soon as possible.

Feedback from the community liaison groups for the previous phases of the project and from the general public has identified flooding, property access, flora and fauna and noise impacts as important issues for the project.

To facilitate ongoing community input during the environmental assessment and concept design refinement phase of the project, the following interest groups have been formed in place of the previous community liaison groups for the project:

  • Flora and fauna interest group
  • Noise interest group
  • Flooding interest group proposed to be formed from representatives of local council floodplain management committees, and
  • Property access group for landowners along the section of the existing highway to be upgraded between Nambucca Heads and south Urunga

Notes from the Noise and Flora and Fauna interest group meetings held to date can be viewed by clicking here.
